Introduction to MSME / Udyam Registration
The MSME sector is the backbone of the Indian economy, accounting for almost 30% of the GDP of India. To regulate and simplify the business processes of this sector, the Government of India came up with the concept of Udyam Registration, which provides businesses with a permanent identity. By 2026, all previous systems of registration have been superseded by the Udyam Registration process (including the Udyog Aadhaar or EM-II).
At Ruchi Anand & Associates, we assist entrepreneurs in obtaining this important license. Irrespective of whether you are a manufacturing firm or a technological services company, Udyam Registration is no longer a mere "paperwork option"; it is now the essential gateway to obtaining government assistance, loan facilities without any collateral, and immunity from delayed payments.
New MSME Classification Criteria
The government has moved away from a "Manufacturing vs. Services" split. Now, all businesses are classified based on a Composite Criteria of Investment and Annual Turnover.
| Category |
Investment in Plant & Machinery |
Annual Turnover |
| Micro |
Not more than ₹2.5 Crore |
Not more than ₹10 Crore |
| Small |
Not more than ₹25 Crore |
Not more than ₹100 Crore |
| Medium |
Not more than ₹125 Crore |
Not more than ₹500 Crore |
Note: If an enterprise crosses the ceiling limits of its present category in either of the two criteria (Investment or Turnover), it will cease to exist in that category and be placed in the next higher category.
Benefits of MSME / Udyam Registration
Protection Against Delayed Payments
This is the most crucial advantage. According to the MSMED Act, in case the buyer takes possession of the goods or services provided by the MSME, he has to make payment within 45 days. In the event of failure to make such payment, he shall be liable to pay compound interest three times the bank rate of RBI.
Collateral-Free Bank Loans
The registered MSMEs can get loans without providing any asset or collateral through the CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises) scheme, the amount of which may range from ₹2 Crores to ₹5 Crores.
Subsidy on Patent & Trademark
For stimulating innovations, the government offers a subsidy of 50% in connection with the fees incurred in applying for patents and trademarks by Udyam-registered entities.
Electricity Bill Concessions
State governments provide reduced tariffs for power consumed by registered MSME units.
ISO Certification Reimbursement
MSMEs may get reimbursement for certification fees incurred for attaining ISO 9000/ISO 14001 certification.
Exemption in Government Tenders
The registered MSMEs may get exemption from payment of EMD in Government tenders.
Requirements for MSME Registration
The registration process is paperless and based on self-declaration. However, accuracy is paramount to avoid penalties for misrepresentation.
